Pre-Update 9 - Devlog 3 - Development Hell & Source Control

Little bit of ramble for this one.

Not much progress for the last two days. I was actually super excited about implementing the Personality system as well.

However, when I was doing a actualy game build 2 days ago, it failed after 3 hours building due to out of disk space!

And then when I look at the project right now. I think the project are getting pretty good in a sense that there will have potiential but one thing that I am always aware of and of a concern is source control.

Because at the moment, like any indie developer starting out, due to me been poor and not much budget for the game, I also try to save as much as possible. And one of the higher cost involve for game development are the larget file assets that need to be stored and source controlled.

Currently, I only source control the main files such as the code scripts, settings and anything custom. While rest of the assets especially the large file art asset are simply store in my harddisk. It make senese since those can be redownload off the asset store or any pruchase location. However, I am still self aware and skeptical for event that could potientially occurred such as the asset got removed from the store/purchase location for whatever reason and I could no longer download it again.

So, right now the whole project are running in a very riskly situation. And i also encounter previously and know that if my harddrive died right now, it will cause all kind of headache and will take lot of frustration to get it back up and running.

However, uploading that 100gb+ of assets will cost me quite a bit per month. So for the last 2 days I was experiementing with ways to modify the project so that I can source control all files required for the project, yet skip files that are not required.

Bad news is that, and funny enough, my attempt to make it better source control by moving some files around actually boke the project! T_T

Now I finally thought of a good way to mange and source control the assets. But I will need to repair the damage first. It will probably need to use a bit of monthly fee from now on for the source control as well. But it definatly better than no source control.

So frustration for me at the moment as I wait for the project to recompile everything again. Taking forever! Used up my time that I could of been adding new features to the game!

Off to a little bit of good new thought is that before I was doing this file moving, I had got the Personality system linked up and working. Also planned a bit on the next project update release note structure so that the next update will be slightly more professional including something like a changelog.

Now just need this source control proejct back to a working condition.
